They say rain on your wedding day is good luck. Although, some might think differently, especially if you’re having an outside ceremony (or if you’re the photographer…)! As I drove out to the Old Fifty Six Barn that morning, I couldn’t help but wonder why there were ominous looking clouds about as there hadn’t been any chance of rain in the forecast for this gorgeous September Saturday! As I got closer, the wind picked up and I held my breath as I started mentally preparing for a whirlwind of a day, (luckily, I brought my water gear and a dozen umbrellas)!
The venue was beautiful, every detail was meticulously planned and meaningful in it’s own way. And, if anything, the impending weather gave me a jolt of energy and creativity while I worked through the afternoon; Alyssa and Ty were seriously a photographer’s dream to work with, we effortlessly shuffled between casual and formal portraits AND I had an absolute blast with their wedding party (there are some pretty amazing people in this group right here).
Just as we were finishing up with pre-ceremony photos, the rain hit. The bride and groom and their families made plans to move the ceremony inside, BUT, a small miracle happened as the rain shower stopped and there looked to be a small break in the storms. This BRAVE couple decided to go for it and have the ceremony outside. AND. IT. WAS. AMAZING. Literally one of the craziest things I’ve ever witnessed. We had the setting sun to the right of us and dead ahead, a magnificent storm growing closer by the minute. Everyone sat on the edge of their seats as we witnessed this extraordinary couple getting married while we watched lightning bolts strike in the near distance. Oakley, the adorable yellow lab, and Dan, the amazing officiant and close family friend, were the only exceptions to the nerves; Dan’s beautifully crafted ceremony went on without a hitch, he took his time through every story and memory as if a part of him knew everything would hold off just for us. And it did.
As soon as the couple received hugs from their guests after the ceremony finished, I grabbed them for a quick (and I mean, quick) portrait session. One might call me crazy, but it was totally worth it. Somehow, Alyssa and Ty acted like pros in front of the camera despite the thunder overhead! And sure enough, it POURED almost as soon as we got inside. Everyone was relieved to be safely indoors the rest of the evening as we all laughed, cried (at some amazing speeches, yes Katie Olson, I’m looking at you!), and danced the night away.
The storm was just moving out as I packed my car for home. Perhaps luck was on our side that day after all. I had an amazing time being a part of this incredible day, and I wish these two nothing but love, happiness, (and a few more wild memories, of course!)
